The annual shark festival (aka Sea Fest) took place this past weekend in Brooklyn, a small community not far from Liverpool, Port Mouton and the cottage. This is an annual festival with quite a number of activities beyond the shark competition going on all weekend. One highlight was a free concert by April Wine, a Nova Scotian rock band that has been churning out great music since the early 1970s.
The contestants for the shark fishing competition went offshore 20 (or so) KMs and did their best to catch a shark. They were required to return to the harbour and the marina by 5:00PM in order to be eligible. This particular boat came in with the largest shark of the day.
As each shark was weighed, they keep a tally of the largest shark, groundfish and mackeral. At this point, the largest shark was a mere 319 lbs.
During the hour that we were present for the returning boats, we saw several smaller sharks, such as this one.
Eventually, one of the last boats of the day brought in this behemoth - 339 lbs. ![]()
In this video, you can see the last boat of the day. The judges are hauling the shark out of the boat and weighing it. The fiddle in the background was a young lad who was playing away on the steps of the marina clubhouse.
