In Port Mouton

We have been here in Port Mouton for almost four weeks and have been enjoying the results of our efforts from the last few years. The electricity is connected and the fridge is cooling the beverages. This may seem to be a thing that we should not be too excited about but when you are in the woods and building a cottage, these little things are actually quite huge.

We watched our neighbour David bring his irish moss to the wharf in Port Mouton and sell it to the local collector, who then sells it to a fish factory a ways down the coast from here. Have a look at this photo of a moss boat which is moored next to its larger and perhaps older brother the lobster boat:

Here is a photo of the hard work it takes to collect and sell moss.

Coming with 2000 lbs of moss

The container that is being loaded will hold over 500 pounds of irish moss and the moss collectors can gather from 1000 – 2500 pounds per day.

A hard day’s work
