Germany – Austria >> The Excellent Adventure

In June (2012), Annette flew off to Germany where she rendezvoused with our niece, Tanya. The two then set off on a two-week tour through Germany, Luxembourg, France and Austria, starting from Frankfurt airport.

Annette had to wait a few hours for Tanya’s flight and so went into the European hub to look around. As with many European cities, there is an interesting blend of new…

… and memories of yore…

Lest we forget

Germany, especially in the south is literally peppered with castles, some near ruin but many still inhabited today. Eltz Castle is still owned privately and has been inhabited by the same family since the 12th century.

Speaking of castles, even the manhole covers have castles.

In Freiburg – University City

Annette and Tanya then travelled through Luxembourg to Strasbourg where a nightmarish grid of oneway streets left them thankful for the GPS and grateful that they weren’t even more lost. From there, a dog-leg down to a farm in the Black Forest, took them past Freiburg, a university town. Being full of students, it has some wonderful art houses…

After studying the local culture, Annette and Tanya take a break

From there, they progressed on to Baden-Baden, famous spa town since the Roman Empire, and more recently in the 19th century the center of European style and gambling. Along the way, they were enjoying the fruits of German cooking, or perhaps that is the meats…

The wurst of its kind

From Baden-Baden, they travelled east through the Black Forest to the Romantic Road area and the town of Rottenburg (perhaps Rothenburg??).

Rothenburg City Walls

From the small towns of the Black Forest, they found their way to Munich, home of the Oktoberfest and great German beer. In fact, the beer is so good they know you will want more. So, why bother with small, Canadian-sized glasses. Nothing less than a 1 liter glass can be found.

German practicality at its best

Since Munich is far from any oceans and surf, they make the best of a standing wave in a river.

German safety – no coral reefs here

They also don’t fool around with their fish. Just jam the whole thing on a stick and broil it!

Hmmm – fish on a stick and a liter of beer!

After some surprising developments in their travel arrangements, Annette and Tanya made their way to Mayrhofen in the Austrian Alps.

Spectacular views

Even the cows looked relaxed as if they have just come from the Tirolean spa.

The Alps are still full of glaciers and so the excellent adventurers decided to go inside one. In case of low hanging icicles, Tanya donned a safety hat.

Hey, that looks like a bucket!
The ice caves were lit for special effect.

Is that blue ice with green lights, or green ice with blue lights?

Mayrhofen was their last stop before driving and training all the way back to Frankfurt and the airport.
