Wood Cutting Part 2 – Hauling Wood

Cutting a tree down is actually pretty easy. Just take your chainsaw, and slice through the tree. The hard part comes before you cut when you make room for the tree to fall, as we saw in the last post, and after when you try to haul the wood out of the forest.

Once you get your machinery to the woods, then you need to haul your trailer around through ‘roads’ in the woods.

Last exit to forest

You need to get as close as possible to the piles of wood you have left all over the place …

Back into side roads

… and then load ‘er up!

Loaded trailer

I am not sure how much a loaded trailer weighs, but I suspect quite a lot. The ATV hardly seems up to the job, but watch this …

The bouncing and tugging of the trailer causes all sorts of unexpected issues. For example, the hitch takes a beating and can actually work loose.

Oops

Luckily, in this case we were able to move some of the wood over the axle and so then push the tongue of the trailer back down onto the hitch on the ATV – once we adjusted the hitch itself.

Weight over the axle.

After a few more trips …

Another trip

and another

We filled the truck and took it all home.

Load of wood – just over 1/2 of a cord

Then, the real fun begins – splitting the wood and stacking in our shed.

A full shed! – about 3 1/2 cords.
