Whale watching with Kym & Mo

Kym and Morris (from New Zealand via Dubai) visited Nova Scotia (and us) for a week and during that time we managed to tour quite a bit of the local area. We then went to Digby Neck and Long Island to the small town of Freeport to go whale watching. Freeport is a lovely little place on the far end of Long Island. The port area at low tide is quite neat to see due to the highest tidal changes in the world in the Bay of Fundy.

We went with a company called The Zipping Zodiac, very aptly named because zipping is a good description of how the zodiac moves over the water. The company is run by two brothers, Robbie and Reed. They are lobster fishermen when the season is open and and in between seasons they run the whale watching tour company.

We managed to see two humpback whales and followed them around the Bay of Fundy for an hour or so watching them dive to feed and then surface. Here is a shot of the fluke, or pectoral fin of one of the whales. One very interesting thing was to see their “footprint” as they dove and gave a mighty swish with their tale to dive. Apparently, they spotted a blue whale in the bay as well about four weeks earlier. These are the largest whales in the world and not so common in this area.
